LARIJANI – IRAN – MAJLIS – POLITICS
Washington, 1 June (IranVNC)—Newly elected Majlis [parliament] Speaker Ali Larijani said today that the eighth Majlis is dedicated to resolving differences between the legislative and executive branch and to having a greater role in managing the country’s affairs.
“We are presently trying to find a way to make a more accurate supervision on the affairs of the country adopting a new methodology and a new mechanism to resolve the differences between the legislative and the executive,” Larijani was quoted by the semi-official Fars News as saying.
Larijani, who became formal Majlis speaker after receiving 237 of 259 votes cast in the 287-member assembly, also serves as Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s representative to the Supreme National Security Council.
The Speaker further said the Majlis is awaiting the government’s nomination for the economic and interior ministers. “We are waiting for the government to come up with competent candidates to help the ministries undertake their long-term programs,” Larijani was quoted by Iran’s state news IRNA as saying.
Larijani called for the speedy formation of Majlis commissions so that the assembly could start addressing the issues facing the country, including high rates of inflation and poverty. Iran’s Central Bank reports that inflation was 18.4 percent in the Iranian year ending in March, a figure which economic experts say is lower than the actual rate. A government study last month found that 15 million Iranians are living under the poverty line.
