IRAN – EXECUTION – HUMAN RIGHTS

Washington, 9 June (IranVNC)—Iran is scheduled to execute 11 prisoners in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison on Wednesday, E’temad newspaper reported this morning. One of the prisoners set to be hanged was below the age of 18 at the time of his conviction, the report adds.

The prisoners, whose names and gender have not been released by Iranian Judiciary officials, were convicted of “murder and rape”, E’temad reports.

Behnud Shoja’i, whose execution was postponed by one month on May 6, was not listed as one of the 11 individuals, the report said. Shoja’i was convicted of murder following a scuffle in a Tehran park; he was 17 at the time. The EU presidency, along with Amnesty International, protested against his death sentence.

According to an AFP count, Iran has executed at least 100 people this year, the latest being today in the northeastern province of North Khorasan. The unidentified man was hanged today for drug trafficking, AFP reports, quoting the Jomhuri Eslami daily on Monday.

The Islamic Republic executed 317 people last year, second only to China, an Amnesty International report found earlier this year.
