IRAN – MUJAHEDEEN – BRITAIN
Washington, 25 June (IranVNC)—Iran’s Foreign Ministry today condemned a decision by British lawmakers to lift a ban on the Iranian resistance group known as the Mujahedeen-e Khalq [MEK].
“The move by Britain regarding the ‘Monaqefin’ [Hypocrites, derogatory reference to the MEK] – which because of its terrorist activities in Iran and Iraq is hated in both countries and by the world – is disgraceful and utterly condemned,” the official IRNA news agency quoted Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mohammad-Ali Hosseini as saying.
The Islamic Republic considers the MEK to be a terrorist organization, and has long charged the group, which received support from Saddam Hussein during the Iran-Iraq war, with terrorist operations targeting Iranian officials.
The British government yesterday officially removed the MEK from its list of terrorist organizations after the Court of Appeal in May upheld a ruling that found it was not justifiable to keep the group on the blacklist.
The MEK is currently on the terrorist lists of both the United States and the European Union.
