IRAN – JORDAN – PROTEST – MEK

Washington, 30 June (IranVNC)—Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Monday summoned the Jordanian ambassador in Tehran, Ahmad Jalal al-Mefleh, to explain its “strong protest” against what it called “Jordan’s backing of the Mujahedeen-e Khalq [MEK]” Iranian resistance group.

On Sunday, the MEK held a rally on the outskirts of Paris calling on the EU to follow an earlier British ruling and remove the group from their terrorist blacklist. Thirty-three Jordanian politicians, including 12 parliamentary deputies, participated in the rally, and the head of this group gave a speech in favor of the Mujahedeen-e Khalq.

The MEK, a majority of whose members are currently based at camp Ashraf, near Baghdad, are an Iranian resistance group whom Iran blames for acts of terror and bombings in the country. During the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq War, the MEK took up arms against the Islamic Republic with funding from Saddam Hussein. American forces disarmed the group after the US-led invasion in 2003 and have monitored them at camp Ashraf since then.

Last month, the British Court of Appeal upheld an earlier ruling that found it was not justifiable to keep the group on Britain’s list of terrorist organizations. But the European Union and United States still consider the group to be a terrorist organization.
