IRAN – DAILY – SUMMONS

Washington, 1 July (IranVNC)—A Tehran court has summoned the managing-director of E’temad-e Melli, one of Iran’s reformist daily newspapers, for “spreading lies”, Fars News Agency reports.

The court has summoned managing director Mohammad Javad Haqshenas for “publishing lies with the intention of disturbing public opinion and slander”, Fars News Agency quoted Abolhassan Pour-Hosseini, public relations director for the Public and Revolution Court of Tehran, as saying in a news conference.

Pour-Hosseini said Haqshenas will be asked to answer questions about “an insulting article” written by moderate cleric Rasoul Montajebnia and published in today’s edition of the paper.

“The court has issued the summon and arrest order of Mr. Haqshenas for spreading lies in articles carried by the daily and the prosecutor has complained about Montajebnia’s insulting article,” the semi-official ISNA news agency quoted an unnamed judiciary official as saying.

The article in question urged clerics to examine statements made by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in which he suggested he was being supported by the Hidden Imam.

Haqshenas told ISNA he was writing a clarification of the article, which will be published tomorrow.
