Washington, 13 August (IranVNC)—Hamshahri-ye Javan [The Young Citizen], the weekly supplemental to the conservative Hamshahri Newspaper, was banned today on charges of “publishing unethical items” after it printed a report entitled, “Love and adolescents: Self-interest in new loves”.
Hamshahri Newspaper is affiliated with Tehran’s Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, a potential challenger to Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the June 2009 presidential elections.
Kargozaran Newspaper, quoting Faridoddin Haddad-Adel, the chief editor of Hamshahri-ye Javan, as saying that Iran’s Press Review Board, which is part of the Ministry of Islamic Guidance, closed the publication and referred it to court for “publishing bawdy items and encouraging relationships between girls and boys”.
Haddad-Adel is the son of Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel, former speaker of Iran’s Majlis [parliament] and current Majlis member.
Fars News Agency also today reported that the publication, Sargarmi-ye Mahaneh [Entertainment Monthly], had been banned.
According to Fars, this publication, which published only time schedules, was shut down on charges of “using inappropriate expressions”.
