IRAN – EXECUTION – ZAHEDAN
Washington, 14 August (IranVNC)—Iran today hanged a man convicted of rape in the southeastern province of Sistan-va-Baluchistan, the Fars News Agency reported.
The man, identified as Hassan Sadeq-Pour, was executed in Zahedan Prison for raping a woman, the report said. His sentence was upheld by the province’s Supreme Court and the Judiciary’s Amnesty Commission.
Sadeq-Pour’s execution is the latest in a recent wave of executions in this province.
Four other men were hanged in Zahedan on Monday for drug trafficking, while two others, including social activist and blogger Yaghoub Mehrnehad, were executed on 4 August.
According to Tabnak News, Mehrnehad was charged with “moharebeh” [“waging war against God”] and “corruption” stemming from his alleged membership in the Jondollah armed group, which has carried out bombings and kidnappings against Iranian security forces in Sistan-va-Baluchistan Province.
Today’s hanging brings the number of executions in Iran to at least 167, according to an AFP count. Citing figures by Iran’s Judiciary, more than 41 individuals have been executed since 22 July in Iran.
Drug trafficking, adultery, armed robbery, murder and rape are among some of the offenses punishable by death in the Islamic Republic.
Iran has received widespread condemnation by international bodies, including the European Union, and human rights groups, such as Amnesty International, for its high use of the death penalty.
