IRAN – NUCLEAR – SITES
Washington, 19 August (IranVNC)—Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization (IAEO) signed contracts with six Iranian companies today, giving them 13 months to find suitable locations for the construction of future nuclear plants, the official IRNA news agency reports.
The selected sites will be submitted to Iran’s Nuclear Security System for approval and the project will then enter the construction phase, Ahmdad Fayaz-Baksh, the executive director of the IAEO told reporters.
Fifty-eight domestic and four international companies competed for the right to bid on the contract and Iran solicited bids from 16 domestic companies, reports IRNA.
Six were granted contracts to select eight sites spread throughout the country for construction of nuclear plants, including sites near the Caspian Sea and the Persian Gulf, Fayaz-Baksh said without naming the companies.
The business and engineering arm of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, Khatam al-Arabia, which is one the list of Iranian companies affected by the sanctions imposed on Iran by the United Nations, is among the six chosen companies, reports AFP.
“The six mentioned companies must carry out water, earthquake, population, topography, ecology, meteorological and environmental studies in 13 months,” Fayaz-Baksh said.
Iran said last year it had started building an “indigenous” 360-watt nuclear power plant in southern Iran. “Darkhovin is under basic design and there has been a nine-year scheme drafted for its construction,” AFP quoted Fayaz-Bakshh as saying in reference to the new plant.
