IRAN – OLYMPICS – MEDAL

Washington, 19 August (IranVNC)–Iran clinched its first medal at the 2008 Olympics Games in Beijing today, when Morad Mohammadi came in third place on the first day of the freestyle wrestling competition.

Mohammadi, an Iranian wrestler in the 60 kilogram weight class, defeated Zelimkhan Huseynov from Azerbaijan to win the bronze medal. Kenichi Yumoto Japan shared the bronze medal with Mohammadi.

This was the first medal that the Iranian team won in these games.

The weak performance of the Iranian team until now during the 2008 Olympic Games aroused criticism in the Majlis [parliament] and the Iranian media.

Mohammadi’s bronze medal was Iran’s 32nd in freestyle wrestling in Olympic history. Iran has won a total of 46 medals in all Olympic fields of competition.
