IAEA – IRAN – TALKS

Washington, 20 August (IranVNC)—Iran’s envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency [IAEA], Ali Asghar Soltanieh, said today that talks with the deputy head of the IAEA, Ollie Heinonen, during his visit in Tehran had been constructive.

“Talks between Iran and the IAEA took place in a constructive, scientific atmosphere,” the state-run IRNA news agency quotes Soltanieh as saying.

The latest round of talks between Iranian officials and Heinonen, who heads the IAEA’s Safeguards Division, began on Monday as the UN nuclear watchdog continues to press Iran on Western intelligence that suggests its controversial nuclear drive may have a military component.

Speaking to IRNA today, Deputy for International Affairs of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization [IAEO] Mohammad Saeedi, said: “During these negotiations, issues pertaining to current matters with regard to the safeguards inspections involving Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization and the International Atomic Energy Agency were discussed and the parties agreed to continue talks.”

Heinonen’s second trip to Tehran in August comes as IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei is expected to present a report on Iran’s nuclear activities to that agency’s Board of Governors in September.

Iran, which rejected a new incentives offer by the 5+1 powers in June to halt uranium enrichment, risks a fourth round of U.N. Security Council Sanctions.
