IRAN – PARK – FIRE

Washington, 24 August (IranVNC)—The second fire in Golestan Forest in northern Iran, which began on Saturday continued today. Environmental officials in Iran said the condition of Golestan National Park, the largest natural park in Iran, was “critical”.

Golestan National Park first caught fire last week. Although the fire came under control, it began again Saturday afternoon.

Delavar Najafi, a deputy chief of Iran Department of Environment, told Iran’s semi-official news agency, ISNA, on Sunday: “Saturday’s fire came under control once, but due to changing wind patterns the fire spread.”

The cause and extent of damages have still not been announced.

Golestan National Park is situated in an area of 91,000 square kilometers between the Alborz Mountain Range in East Mazandaran Province and Khorasan Province and is the largest natural park in Iran.

The park is registered with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization [UNESCO] as “one of Earth’s environmental reserves”.
