TABRIZ UNIVERSITY – STUDENTS – DETAINED – SUMMONED

Washington, 21 August (IranVNC)—Yesterday morning, two students activists of Tabriz University [northwestern Iran] were detained following a raid on their houses by security forces a week earlier, when some of their personal belongings were confiscated.

According to Amir Kabir University student newsletter [AUT News] website, no news has as yet been issued on the reason behind the detention of these two students, named Mansur Aminian and Maqsud Ahdi. But Amir Kabir newsletter has linked the move to “the rise in pressure brought to bear against student activists and the creation of a climate of fear and suppression” in universities, by the authorities.

Mansur Aminian is a post-graduate student of mechanical engineering and secretary of the Islamic Student Society [ISS] of the Technical Faculty of Tabriz University. Maqsud Ahdi is a student of geography and a member of the ISS of the Humanities Faculty of the same university.

The detention of these students follows the arrest of four other Tabriz University students recently, named: Sajjad Radmehr, Faraz Zahtab, Aydin Khwajeh’i and Amir Mardani, on charges of engaging in [militant ]student activities, and brings the total of Tabriz University students arrested recently to six.

Amir Kabir website further reported that yesterday, three students of Shiraz Medical Sciences University were summoned to appear before Fars Province’s Revolution Court. The three students were: Mas’ud Kheyrati, former spokesperson of the ISS of Shiraz Medical Sciences University; Mehdi Amirian, the secretary of that university’s ISS and Nader Dinari, the secretary of the political committee of the same university’s ISS.

Last March, these three students along with Mohammad Mehdi Ahmadi, former secretary of the ISS of Shiraz University, were arrested by the Intelligence Ministry local branch office in Shiraz during a ceremony marking the anniversary of the nationalization of Iran’s Oil industry [March 1953] and spent some time in detention.
