IRAN – PRISONERS – STRIKE

Washington, 24 August (IranVNC)—In a communiqué that was published on Sunday, thirteen Kurdish political prisoners in Iran’s prisons said that they would begin a hunger strike on Monday in order to obtain their demands.

Eight of those who signed the communiqué were sentenced to death on charges of “acting against the security of the country”.

In the communiqué, the prisoners highlighted the goal of the hunger strike as: “focusing public opinion on the difficult conditions of prison, the situation of civil Kurdish activists and the situation of human rights in [Iran’s Province of] Kurdistan”.

“The government’s recognition of the political and civil identity of political prisoners, the re-trial in the [cases] of death sentences, and the immediate halt to executions of all political and civil prisoners, and an end to the torture, persecution and inhumane behavior toward prisoners” were among other demands listed in the communiqué.
