IRAN – MILITARY - APPIONTMENTS
Washington, 25 August (IranVNC)—Iran’s military officials announced yesterday that that the Islamic Republic had launched production of a new line of semi-heavy submarines, named “Qaem”, in order to “maintain security in the Strait of Hormoz” in the Persian Gulf.
“Qaem, which belongs to the semi-heavy class of submarines, is capable of transporting and firing subsurface torpedoes, and can transport Special Forces,” Iran’s official IRNA news agency quoted the news center of Iran’s Department of Defense as saying.
The report did not provide any further information about the new vessel.
Iran’s officials have repeatedly warned against an attack on Iran, saying that they would “control” the traffic of sea vessels through the strategic Strait of Hormoz, near Iran’s southern border.
Over 13 thousand vessels and nearly 40 percent of the world’s oil supply pass through Hormoz every year.
Also yesterday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, appointed Brigadier Generals Seyyed Abdolrahim Mousavi, Ahmadreza Pourdastan, and Mohammad Hossein Dadras to the posts of Interim Chief of the Army, Chief of Ground Forces, and Deputy Joint Chief of Staff, respectively.
