LANDMINE – EXPLOSION – IRAN
Washington, 25 August (IranVNC)—A landmine explosion in the western Iranian town of Sar-Pol Zahab, located near Iran’s border with Iraq, killed two children and wounded five other people, Jomhoury-e Eslami Newpaper reported yesterday.
A landmine explosion in a river near the Shohada Hospital of Sar-Pol Zahab, killed two children aged 13 and 15, and wounded five other individuals, the report says, citing Iran’s deputy head of emergency operations.
During the eight-year Iran-Iraq war [1980 to 1988], both Iran and Iraq placed landmines near their border areas. Many of these minefields have yet to be cleared.
