CHOLERA – IRAN – DEATH

Washington, 26 August (IranVNC)—A nine-year-old Afghan girl afflicted with cholera died this morning in a hospital in southwestern Tehran, hours before the head of an Iranian health organization called on officials from Iran’s health ministry to be more diligent in combating the disease in the capital city.

According to the Asr-e Iran website, officials at the Yaft Abad police station in the capital’s southwest were informed of the girl’s death at 4:00 a.m.

The death comes as Dr. Iraj Khosronia, the head of the Iranian Internists Organization, criticized the country’s Health Ministry for not heeding warnings by health organizations in Iran.

“The officials must say that there is a disease and must also tell the people what are the solutions for combating and preventing this disease,” Mehr News Agency quoted Khosronia as saying.

Khosronia said that the Health Ministry should seek information from the country’s doctors on methods to better prevent the disease.

Pointing to the fact that cholera has been in Iran for the past 30 years, Khosronia told Mehr: “The important point in this debate is the health ministry’s readiness to prevent an outbreak of the disease.”

Last week, Iran’s Ministry of Health announced that so far, 84 cases of cholera have been identified in Iran. Today’s death puts the number of victims of cholera in Iran at five this year.
