IRAN – NOWRUZ – UNESCO
Washington, 26 August (IranVNC)—The second three-day meeting of nations that celebrate the Nowruz holiday began on Monday in Tehran.
The meeting is being attended by the director of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization [UNESCO] and representatives from Iran, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, and Kyrgyzstan.
The goal of the meeting is to register the ancient festival of Nowruz on the UNESCO’s spiritual heritage list.
Nowruz is the New Year in Iran and Central Asia. The Nowruz celebrations start on the first day of the month of Farvardin in the Iranian calendar, which coincides with the first day of spring [March 20th], and dates back to the times of ancient civilizations in Mesopotamia.
Afghanistan also celebrates Nowruz, however no representative from that country is attending the meeting.
