MAZAHERI – PRESIDENTIAL – ELECTION

Washington, 4 November (IranVNC)—Iran’s former Central Bank governor, Tahmasb Mazaheri, today dismissed a news website report last Sunday that he was standing as a candidate in the presidential election next June and has told the semi-official Fars News Agency that he remains undecided on the issue.

“Basically, so far I have not taken any decisions on this matter – neither have I set up any campaign headquarters,” Mazaheri told Fars News.

On 2 November, the Borna News website reported that Mazaheri told the website in an interview that he would run in the 12 June 2009 presidential election, and that he would open campaign headquarters across the country as of Sunday.

But Mazaheri, who was replaced last September by Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, today denied that report.

“I have not had any interviews or discussions about deciding to join the presidential race with any news agencies,” he insisted, adding that he believed it was “too soon” to discuss the election.

Meanwhile, Ali Fallahian, a member of Iran’s Assembly of Experts, announced today that he would not compete in the election, Fars News reported.

But Fallahian offered advice to any potential presidential candidate, saying: “keep God in mind and have compassion for the people.”
