Iran holds conference on “Creating discourse in world media”

CONFERENCE – DISCOURSE – MEDIA – AZAD UNIVERSITY
Washington, 17 November (IranVNC)—A conference on “Creating discourse in world media” was held on Saturday 25 Aban [15 November] in Islamic Azad University of Tehran’s department of science and research with the participation of Iran’s professors of communication sciences.
According to Iran’s official news agency, IRNA, next to Azad University, this conference was sponsored by the University of Tehran, Allameh-Tabatabai University, Imam Sadeq and Imam Hossein colleges and Iran’s Voice and Vision [radio and television] News College.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Mohammad Soltanifar, professor of communication at Azad University’s department of science and research, who called that conference “a rare and auspicious occurrence”.
He added that thirty articles were submitted, of which eight were selected to be read at the conference.
Soltanifar went on to indicate the goal of the conference as: “showing the techniques and tactics of creating images; reviewing recurrent scenarios in the world media; conducting a comparative study of image-making and the designing discourse in cyber media; as well as the influence of the power and ideology of discourse in the world media.”
Other speakers in the conference included Dr. Mehdi Mohsenian-Rad, professor of communications at Imam Sadeq College, who spoke about the negative consequences of “imaginary audience”. He explained that the media must not allow their interaction with their audience to be a one sided one, adding that those who work in the media must try to create a three-way active communication between the government, the nation, and the elite.
Dr. Saeed Reza Ameli, professor of communications at the University of Tehran, spoke on the image that the Western media display about Iran. He indicated that the aim of presenting such an image of Iran as “a policy of division; legitimizing war, if necessary,… and putting a stop to the Islamic movement.”
Dr. Hossein Afkhami, the director of communications group at Allameh-Tabatabai University in his speech emphasized the importance of literature in promoting quality of media programs.
Other speakers at the conference included Dr. Fereydoun Verdinezhad, professor of communications at the News College, Dr. Hassan Bashiri, president of the College of Culture and Communications at Emam Sadeq University, and Dr. Yunes Shekarkhah, professor of communications at Allameh-Tabatabai University and the manager of Hamshahri online.
