IRAQ – JOURNALIST – DEATH
Washington, 17 June (IranVNC)—An Iraqi journalist was shot and killed today in the northern city of Mosul, Iraqi media reports.
Mohey al-Din Abd al-Hamid al-Naqib, 50, was shot by “unidentified gunmen” this morning as he was leaving his house in al-Ziraie district of Mosul, Iraq’s Aswat al-Iraq [Voices of Iraq] news agency said, quoting an official speaking on the condition of anonymity.
Al-Naqib was a presenter for the local Ninewa TV and Radio, affiliates of the state-run Iraqi Media Network.
The Paris-based press freedom watchdog Reporters Without Borders [RSF] says the death of al-Naqib brings to 216 the number of media workers killed in Iraq since the US-led invasion of the country in March 2003.
Another media organization, the Committee to Protect Journalists, says Iraq has the worst record for failing to solve murders of journalists, and RSF has urged the Iraqi government to open an investigation into the killing.
“The impunity that has prevailed in the country for more than five years only encourages the killers of journalists to continue their evil work,” RSF said in a statement.
