Iran basketball team shocks Serbia

Washington, 31 July (IranVNC)—Iran’s national basketball team, which is participating in this summer’s Olympic games in Beijing, managed a stunning defeat of the five-time world champion Serbia last night, in their second International Basketball Federation [FIBA] Diamond Ball game in China.

Washington, 31 July (IranVNC)—Iran’s national basketball team, which is participating in this summer’s Olympic games in Beijing, managed a stunning defeat of the five-time world champion Serbia last night, in their second International Basketball Federation [FIBA] Diamond Ball game in China.

The Iranian side, ranked 33 according to FIBA, defeated the number four ranked Serbian team, 72-70. Iran’s center, Hamad Ehadadi, and guard Javad Davari, both scored 20 points in last night’s win, reports Iran’s English-language news service, Press TV.

“This is the biggest win in Iranian basketball history,” Iran’s coach, Rajko Toroman, said, reports the FIBA website.

Serbia’s captain, Milos Vujanic, said the Iranian basketball team, which is making its first Olympic appearance since 1948, is going to be a “surprise team” in next month’s games. Iran’s group includes Argentina, Lithuania, Russia, Australia and Croatia.

In their third and final Diamond Ball game, Iran will face 11th ranked China tomorrow, led by National Basketball Association [NBA] star Yao Ming.

On Tuesday, Iran lost its first game against reigning Olympic champions and number two ranked Argentina, 81-71.
