PAKISTAN – MUSHARRAF – IMPEACHMENT

Washington, 7 August (IranVNC)—Paksitan’s ruling coalition said today that it would move to impeach President Pervez Musharraf over policies it said have “eroded the trust of the nation” and vowed to continue to pressure the president to resign, AP reports.

Musharraf has vowed to serve out his full five year term which began last October amid a controversial parliamentary vote. However Musharraf has retained power in Pakistan for the past eight years, but did not have control of the Pakistani army until last year.

The Pakistani president has also been a strong US ally since the September 11th attacks in 2001.

The ruling party chief, Asif Ali Zardari, husband of the late Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, said the move to impeach Musharraf was “good news for democracy,” and that it was “imperative” to move forward with the impeachment, AP reports.

Pakistan economy is at its weakest in almost two years, Reuters reports, many in the coalition blame Musharraf’s policies for creating uncertainty and causing a deeper slump in the market.

Musharraf did not issue an official response, but his allies have promised to fight against the impeachment.
