Washington, 17 Aug (IranVNC) –The president of Turkey, Abdullah Gul, while expressing support for the incentive package offered by the great powers to Iran concerning that country’s disputed nuclear activities, warned Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad about “America’s potential military operations”.

The Iranian website Fardanews, quoting the Turkish daily Hurriet, reported that Turkey’s president requested Ahmadinejad to accept the package offered by the five Security Council members plus Germany, and published the contents of the private talks held between the two presidents.

Gul was reported as saying that he “welcomes and supports” the latest package offered by the 5+1 powers and that he considered the package “a window of opportunity”. He was also quoted as telling his counterpart: “You must accept this package and concentrate on the economic development of your country.”

Referring to the “inappropriate” spread of rumours about US intentions to conduct military attacks against Iran, the Turkish president was reported to have advised Ahmadinejad not to be too “content with [Barack] Obama’s statements” [presumably about intending to hold talks with Iran’s leaders].

Responding to Gul, Ahmadinejad reiterated that Iran’s nuclear programme was a “peaceful” one and emphasized that “Iran will not suspend its uranium enrichment activities.”

In continuation of his negotiations, Gul was reported as suggesting that “another expression” should be adopted to replace the term “suspension”.

Also on Saturday [16 August], Sulayman Awad, the Egyptian presidential spokesperson announced that Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz and Egypt’s President Husni Mubarak, have met in Alexandria, Egypt, and held talks on regional issues and Iran’s nuclear dossier.

The website Shahab news reported that the leaders of these two countries, while calling on the leaders of the Islamic Republic to “accept the international community’s request for the inspections of its [Iran’s] nuclear activities”, also requested the leaders of Iran to refrain from acting “as Saddam Husayn did in attacking Kuwait and not disclosing Iraq’s nuclear activities.”

On 5 August too, the Libyan leader, Col Mu’amar Qadhafi, told the Iranian government “to learn a lesson” from the fate of Saddam and warned Iran that “it would not have the power to put up resistance against the West.”
