OLYMPICS – RECORD
Washington, 17 August (IranVNC)—Michael Phelps proved he is one of the greatest Olympians ever, winning a record eight gold medals in a single Olympic games when team USA defeated Australia in world-record time in the men’s 100-meter medley relay.
Phelps’ astonishing performance in Beijing put him over fellow American swimmer Mark Spitz’s 1972 record of seven gold medals in a single Olympic games.
Meanwhile, Jamaica took claim to the world’s fastest man and woman titles, as Usain Bolt easily won the men’s 100-meter in world record time of 9.69 seconds and Jamaica swept the women’s 100-meter, with Shelly-Ann Fraser winning gold with a time of 10.78 seconds, and Kerron Stewart and Sherone Simpson tying for silver at 10.98 seconds.
In men’s tennis, Spain’s Rafael Nadal gave his country its first Olympic gold in tennis by beating Chile’s Fernando Gonzalez 6-3, 7-6 (2), 6-3. Nadal has been victorious in 38 of his last 39 matches, and will dethrone Sweden’s Roger Federer as the world’s number one player tomorrow.
The U.S. is still ahead of China in the medal count, 65-61, while Russia is third with 30 medals.
