SYRIA – ISRAEL – MISSILE TESTS
Washington, 19 August (IranVNC)—The Israeli military released a report today confirming that it has detected Syrian long-range missile tests, which could be a threat to the security of Israel, Syria’s long-time foe, Israel’s daily Haaretz newspaper reports.
Israel’s military says the tests were detected by Israeli radar and missile defense systems, and that the Syrians tested long range-scud missiles, of which Syria has about 1,000, reports Israel National News [INN]website.
The Scud missiles have a range of 300 to 700 kilometers (186-435 miles), and could easily reach Israel, Syria’s southern neighbor.
The Israelis also believe Syria’s arsenal contains chemical and biological weapons, which Syria constructed itself, and INN reports that the late Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, could have sent his regime’s weapons of mass destruction to Syria when the U.S. invaded Iraq in 2003.
With assistance from Iran, North Korea and Russia, Syria has been expanding and improving its military arsenal during the past few years. Syria has also reportedly been arming Lebanese insurgent group, Hezbollah, which the West considers a terrorist organization, according to INN.
In response to the Syrian missile tests, Israel has launched a military exercise simulating a multi-level attack from Syria, Iran, and Lebanon, reports Israel National News.
