PIRATES – IRAN – HOSTAGES – SOMALIA
Washington, 27 August (IranVNC)—Violence continues to escalate in the Gulf of Aden, as pirates hold hostage six vessels, including two Iranian ships, off the coast of Somalia.
The Seafarers Assistance Program (SAP), a maritime watchdog based in Mombasa, Kenya, said that Iranian and Panamanian vessels were hijacked two days ago in the piracy prone region, Business Daily Africa reports today.
Last week, another Iranian tanker carrying 29 crew members was hijacked in the same waters, and is still being held hostage despite Iran’s diplomatic efforts to secure the release of the crew, Press TV reports.
“We are trying to use diplomatic means to release the sailors of the hijacked Iranian ship which was carrying 40,000 tons of iron ore from China to the Netherlands,” said the Managing Director of the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines, Mohammad-Hossein Dajmar, on Saturday.
On that same day, two German ships and a Malaysian tanker were hijacked as well.
The pirates have not released their demands for the return of the crew members.
