OBAMA – IRAN – POLICY

Washington, 2 July (IranVNC)—A senior foreign policy advisor to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has said that an Iran capable of making nuclear weapons would become the biggest threat to the U.S.

“The most dangerous crisis we are going to face potentially in the next three to 10 years is if the Iranians get on the edge developing a nuclear weapon,” said advisor Anthony Lake in an interview with the London-based daily, the Financial Times.

Lake also told the newspaper that Obama, who has drawn criticisms from Republicans for what they see as a “soft” Iran policy, would likely urge the European Union to tighten sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

“If I were the Europeans I would much rather put on the table more sanctions, together with bigger carrots, and have that negotiation than I would face that crisis down the road,” he said.

The EU last week decided to tighten sanctions against Iran for its refusal to heed United Nations Security Council demands to halt uranium enrichment. The sanctions froze the assets of the European branches of Iran’s largest bank, Bank Melli, but stopped short of including Iran’s energy sector.

Lake also emphasized Obama’s stance on holding talks with Tehran, saying that he does not believe Iranian leaders would make major concessions in exchange for “the privilege of speaking with us.”
