PAKISTAN – AFGHANISTAN – BUSH – GILANI

Washington, 28 July (IranVNC)—Pakistan’s Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani restated his country’s commitment to securing the Taliban and al-Qaida stronghold along the Pakistani border with Afghanistan during a meeting with President George W. Bush today, Reuters reports.

Bush and Gilani, who is on his first official visit to Washington, met hours after a missile strike hit a religious school near the Afghan-Pakistani border. Neither leader commented on the incident.

The U.S. is seeking to quell the rising casualties in Afghanistan by convincing Paksitan to do more to secure its border against militia attacks.

Gilani told reporters at the White House that Pakistan’s government is “committed to fight against those extremists and terrorists who are destroying and making the world not safe.”

President Bush addressed the press with a positive outlook on US-Pakistan relations.

“Pakistan is a strong ally and vibrant democracy,” he said. “Of course we talked about the common threat we face, extremists who are very dangerous people.”

Neither Bush nor Gilani gave specific details on Pakistan’s role in preventing border attacks.
