US – DEATH – SENTENCE – BUSH
Washington, 29 July (IranVNC)—President George W. Bush today signed an order approving the execution of an army soldier found guilty of murder and rape, the White House said today.
“President Bush this morning accepted the recommendation of the Secretary of the Army to approve a sentence of death for army private Ronald A. Gray, affirming the sentence that resulted from a general court martial for multiple charges of murder and rape committed while serving as a member of the armed services,” read a statement issued today by White House Press Secretary Dana Perino.
Gray was sentenced to death in 1988, after being convicted of rape and murder by a military court martial at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.
Under US law, the president must approve a death sentence issued by a military court before it can be carried out.
The last US president to approve a military execution was Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1957.
