LIBYA – SANCTIONS – US – TERROISM
Washington, 1 August (IranVNC)—US lawmakers voted in favor of a measure that would lift all remaining sanctions against Libya—a move that could finally lead to the compensation of the families of victims of two terrorist attacks blamed on Libya in the 1980s.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice welcomed the possible restitution for the families of Americans killed in the terrorist attacks.
“I applaud Congress’s action. We hope administration efforts, working with the Congress, will help our fellow citizens close a painful chapter in their lives,” said Rice in a statement released by the State Department.
At the time of the attacks, which took place 1986 and 1988, and left nearly 300 people dead, the U.S. had no political ties with Libya and was seeking to further isolate the country over its state sponsorship of terrorism.
The legislation passed by the Senate is the final step in the years-long process of taking Libya off the US list of state sponsors of terrorism. The bill could help Libya return to an internationally acceptable political status, reports NPR.
