BUSH – ASIA – OLYMPICS
Washington, 4 August (IranVNC)—President George W. Bush sets out today on his last official trip to East Asia where he is expected to tackle nuclear proliferation concerns, human rights violations, and natural disaster recovery, but also attend Olympic events, reports AP.
The president will travel to South Korea, Thailand, and China after a stop at an Alaskan airbase to speak to military personnel.
In China, Bush will attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Beijing—a move that has angered many human rights groups, which have called for a boycott of the Games over the Chinese government’s human rights record.
By his attendance at the games, President Bush hopes to show the he separates sports and politics.
“I made a decision not to politicize the Games; this is for athletics,” Bush, who is an avid sports fan, said on Wednesday. “There’s plenty of time for politics, and I’m confident I’ll have time for politics.”
Bush will be in Beijing from 7 to 11 August.
