IRAN – CONSPIRACY – BUSINESSMEN
Washington, 8 August (IranVNC)—A Louisiana court yesterday convicted two American businessmen of conspiracy charges, for violating a US embargo by exporting engineering software to Iran, AP reports.
James Angehr, 71, and John Fowler, 69, pleaded guilty to the conspiracy charges in April and were sentenced to serve six months and four months, respectively, in a halfway house, the office of Judge Lance Africk confirmed with IranVNC.
Because the judge believed the defendants were remorseful and cooperated with the government, the two avoided the 5 year prison sentences they faced.
Angehr and Fowler each were fined $250,000, which must be paid within a week, Africk’s office said. The two were also sentenced to five years probation.
Prosecutors in the case said Angehr and Fowler’s company, Engineering Dynamics Incorporated, sold software to Iran through a Brazilian business agent, which violates US sanctions against Iran. America considers Iran a state-sponsor of terrorism.
Both Angehr and Fowler apologized for their crimes. Angehr said: “I truly love my country and my family very deeply, but I did act very selfishly without regard for them.”
