PHELPS – OLYMPICS – GOLD

Washington, 12 August (IranVNC)—Michael Phelps has made Olympic history today as he clinches his ninth career Olympic gold medal for the United States in swimming the 200-meter freestyle, marking the third time he has broken a world record.

The ninth gold medal has tied Phelps with Mark Spitz, Carl Lewis, Paavo Nurmi, and Larysa Latynina for the most ever won, AP reports.

“I just wanted to be out [infront] at the 50-meter point and that’s where I was,” said Phelps of his victorious race. “I was in open water and it was difficult for the other guys to see me.”

The 23-year-old Baltimore native is three for three at the Beijing Olympics, and will go for his fourth gold medal, and 10th overall, tomorrow when he will complete in the 200-meter butterfly stroke, an event in which he already holds the world record, Reuters reports.

“Phelps swam so fast,” said Park Tae-hwan of South Korea, who took the silver after Phelps in the freestyle race. “It is my honor to compete with him.”
