BUSH – RUSSIA – GEORGIA – WAR

Washington, 13 August (IranVNC)—President George W. Bush pledged today “unwavering support” for Georgia in the ongoing armed conflict with Russia, and announced that he will send US humanitarian and diplomatic aid to the Georgian people.

“We insist that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia be respected,” declared Bush today at the White House.

Bush said the US supports the efforts of French President Nicolas Sarkozy as the current president of the European Union to broker a peace agreement between the two sides.

Detailing the US course of action, Bush announced that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will travel to France and the Georgian capital of Tbilisi to help in the diplomatic efforts of the EU in resolving the conflict, and assure the Georgian government of America’s support.

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates will direct the US military in a humanitarian mission to Georgia where America will provide humanitarian and medical supplies to the Georgian people, said Bush.

“We expect Russia to honor its commitment to let in all forms of humanitarian assistance,” said the President. “And we expect all Russian forces that entered Georgia in recent days to withdraw from that country.”

President Bush ended his statement with a demand that Russia adheres to the ceasefire and that it honors its international responsibilities.

He said: “To begin to repair the damage to its relations with the United States, Europe and other nations, and to begin restoring its place in the world, Russia must keep its word and act to end this crisis.”
