POLAND – US – MISSILE – SHIELD

Washington, 14 August (IranVNC)—The United States and Poland have agreed to a preliminary plan to install part of an American missile defense shield on Polish soil, Warsaw announced today.

“We have reached a deal with the United States on the shield,” AFP quoted Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk as telling the Polish news channel TVN in an interview today. Tusk said that the two sides reached the deal after Washington agreed to supply Warsaw with additional defense aid.

For its part, the United States told Reuters that they were “near an agreement” and hoped to make a joint announcement later today.

The plan would set up 10 interceptor rockets in Poland and one radar system in the neighboring Czech Republic, completing a defense system already installed in the U.S., Greenland and Britain.

Washington aims to install the missile defense shield scheme by 2012 to twart potential missile attacks by “rogue” states such as Iran.

But Russia has long opposed the project, which it considers a direct threat to its security.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice last month signed an agreement with the Czech Republic for the installation of the radar system on Czech soil.
