IRAN – US – NUCLEAR

Washington, 15 August (IranVNC)—The top US envoy to the Muslim world announced today in Malaysia that the U.S. would pursue a diplomatic solution to the current nuclear stand-off with Iran, and urged Iran to take on “a responsible role” among Islamic countries, AFP reports.

“The United States is committed to securing a diplomatic resolution with Iran on the nuclear issue, “said Sada Cumber, US special envoy to the 57-member Organization of the Islamic Conference [OIC], in a news conference today. “We want Iran to play a responsible role in the region.”

“Once that is resolved, there will be enough opportunities with Iran, through the OIC and others to work on other areas,” Cumber added, AFP reports.

The envoy cited Iran’s importance and influence in the Muslim world and Middle East has precedence for pursuing a purely diplomatic resolution with the Islamic Republic over its controversial uranium enrichment program.

The U.S. and its allies suspect Iran is covertly constructing a nuclear weapon under the guise of an energy program. Iran insists on the peaceful purpose of the program.

Cumber, an American Muslim of Pakistani descent, was appointed to this post by President Bush last February. After Malaysia, he will be touring the oil-rich countries of Brunei and Indonesia before heading for Afghanistan.
