Washington, 15 August (IranVNC)—Team USA dominated on day six of the summer Olympics, with American swimmers and gymnasts winning handsomely. The U.S. now has 46 medals total, five more than second place China.

Michael Phelps kept his quest for a record-breaking eight Olympic gold medals alive, as he won his sixth gold in the 200-meter individual medley. Phelps beat his own world record with a time of 1 minute and 54.23 seconds. He will now attempt to tie Mark Spitz’s record from 1972 of seven Olympic gold medals at the 100-meter butterfly on Saturday in Beijing.

American men took gold and silver in the 200-meter backstroke, as Ryan Lochte took gold and set a world record with a time of 1 minute and 53.94 seconds. Aaron Peirsol earned the silver medal, finishing less than half a second behind Lochte.

Another world record was set by America’s Rebecca Soni in the women’s 200-meter breaststroke. Soni beat previous world record holder Leisel Jones from Australia with a time of 2 minutes and 20.22 seconds.

Nastia Liukin amazed the world by capturing gold in the women’s individual all-around gymnastics competition. The Russian-born Liukin, daughter of Olympic gold medalist male gymnast Valeri Liukin, edged out fellow American Shawn Johnson with a score of 63.325 points.

Johnson, who was considered a favorite going into the competition, finished second with 62.725 points. Her second place finish made history, as it was the first time in Olympic history that US women went 1-2 in the all-around competition.

China’s Yang Yillin finished in third with 62.650 points. Her country took gold in the team competition earlier this week, where the US women finished second.
